Unauthorized parking signs outside homes and businesses can bring a €1,500 fine

A shortage of parking spaces in Greek cities has encouraged some drivers to claim the road outside their homes or businesses with improvised signs, chains, cones, chairs and plant containers. The practice appears regularly in Athens, Thessaloniki and other major cities.

Under Greece’s road traffic rules, placing unauthorized signs or objects that resemble official traffic markings constitutes a serious violation. The issue becomes more serious when the signs confuse drivers, unlawfully restrict parking or affect traffic safety.

Authorities can impose administrative fines of about €350 for the simple occupation of public space, depending on the nature and circumstances of the violation. Signs that imitate official road signs or mislead road users can lead to fines of up to €1,500, with criminal penalties also possible in some cases.

A parking prohibition sign can be installed legally only after approval from the competent authorities. This generally applies to a lawful entrance or exit for a private parking area or garage. Applicants must submit a request to the relevant municipality and traffic services, along with documents such as a building permit or plans proving that a legal parking space exists.

Public roads and parking spaces remain shared public areas. Regularly parking in front of a home does not create private rights over that space unless a specific administrative decision says otherwise. Municipal authorities and traffic police can remove illegally placed barriers, signs and other objects.
