Under the heatwaves, the alarming rise in pet deaths

Successive heatwaves in France have led to an unprecedented rise in pet mortality, straining veterinary emergency services and animal funeral homes. The early and intense nature of these heatwaves has significantly disrupted the daily lives of domestic animals and overwhelmed care providers.

Vincent Côté, director of the Esthima network of animal funeral homes, reported an 18% increase in death volumes compared to the period before the heatwaves began in June. While a seasonal increase in animal deaths is expected during summer, the current intensity and early arrival of extreme heat have caused a notable surge.

"Having such high mortality in the South at this time of year is quite usual, but having the same situation everywhere in France is more unusual," Côté explained. Esthima is increasing its visits to veterinarians to collect deceased animals and prevent overcrowding in cold storage facilities.

Data from 3115 Veterinary Emergencies indicates a significant increase in calls during the first half of July. This situation highlights the vulnerability of pets, including dogs, cats, and rabbits, to extreme temperatures and the urgent need for public awareness and preventative measures.
