Unexpected morning sight on Vilnius, Panevėžys highway: 10 to 20 horses run along the road

Drivers in Vilnius district faced an unusual hazard early Wednesday when a herd of about 10 to 20 horses ran along the Vilnius, Panevėžys highway.

Police received numerous reports about the animals. The first caller contacted emergency services at 7:01 a.m., saying a possible herd of sheep had escaped from an enclosure near the A2 highway at Klevinė homestead.

A second caller quickly corrected the description, saying the animals were horses. Reports then said they had entered the carriageway and could endanger drivers. Later calls placed around 10 to 20 horses running along the road near the village of Galinė.

The reports initially said the animals were moving toward Panevėžys. About 10 minutes later, the information was updated: the horses had turned toward Vilnius. Police eventually brought the situation under control and said the horses were safe and no longer posed a threat to themselves or other road users.
