Unexplained Reindeer Deaths Under Investigation in Svalbard

Norwegian authorities are grappling with a perplexing mystery on the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard, where 13 reindeer have died under unexplained circumstances. The deaths are particularly unusual because they involve adult animals succumbing during the summer months, a period when the herd typically thrives.

The Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) has stated that there are currently no leads or hypotheses to explain the phenomenon. Experts like Vebjørn Veiberg, a specialist at NINA, find the situation odd, as diseases usually target the youngest and oldest members of a population, not the robust adults observed in these cases.
