UNHCR: Disinformation may be behind migrant surge from Morocco

Disinformation and smugglers exploiting a Spanish Supreme Court decision may be driving the surge of migrants from Morocco to Spain, according to Spanish authorities and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

"Based on past experience, there is a probability that this is the case," said Annika Sandlund, UNHCR's Nordic and Baltic chief, indicating that the agency acknowledges the potential role of misinformation in the current migration wave.

The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has pointed to the exploitation of a recent court ruling as a likely catalyst for the increased movement of people.
