Unification Ministry awards UN Command soldier for DMZ peace contributions amid easing tensions

In a move aimed at easing recent tensions, South Korea's Unification Ministry has awarded a soldier from the UN Command for his contributions to promoting peace and the peaceful use of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). The award marks the first time the ministry has recognized an individual for their role in border region safety and DMZ initiatives.

Major Lee Sung-bin of the UN Command received the commendation for his efforts in advancing national tasks related to peace and safety in border areas and facilitating the DMZ's peaceful utilization. Major Lee, who is Korean-American, reportedly served as a key liaison between the Unification Ministry and the UN Command during discussions concerning access for projects like the "Path of Peace" trail. Although he was unable to attend the ceremony due to personal reasons, the ministry plans to present the award separately.

The award is widely interpreted as a gesture to de-escalate a public disagreement between the Unification Ministry and the UN Command. The two entities had previously clashed over the interpretation of the "DMZ Act," specifically regarding who holds the authority to grant access for non-military, peaceful purposes within the DMZ. The ministry advocated for the Unification Minister to have this permitting power, while the UN Command maintained its control.

In addition to Major Lee, the Unification Ministry also honored officials and military personnel from border regions, including those from Goseong and Cheorwon counties in Gangwon Province, and Paju City in Gyeonggi Province. This broader recognition underscores the ministry's commitment to fostering peace and cooperation in the areas surrounding the DMZ, coinciding with the 73rd anniversary of the Korean War Armistice Agreement. The ceremony was attended by governors from the relevant provinces, signaling a unified approach to managing the sensitive border region.
