Union Berlin sign midfielder Imeri from Young Boys Bern

Union Berlin have strengthened their midfield shortly before the transfer deadline by signing Kastriot Imeri from Young Boys Bern.

The 26-year-old Swiss international was a preferred target for Union coach Mauro Lustrinelli. The two previously worked together at FC Thun, where they won the Swiss championship last season.

Imeri said that working with Lustrinelli again played “another important factor” in his decision. He made 79 competitive appearances for Young Boys, including 63 league games, eight Swiss Cup matches and eight European matches. The club said he scored 10 goals and provided 10 assists.

The midfielder also won Swiss league titles with Young Boys in 2023 and 2024, completing the double in 2023. Union did not disclose the transfer fee or the length of his contract.

Imeri cannot immediately join the team on the field. He injured his left thigh during Young Boys’ 2-2 draw at Lausanne on Aug. 8, and Swiss medical staff estimated a recovery period of three to four weeks. Before the injury, he had played three league matches and scored once, in a 6-0 win at defending champions FC Thun.
