Union Berlin slams insane sexist abuse aimed at coach Eta

Union Berlin stands firmly behind its interim head coach, Marie-Louise Eta, after she made history as the first woman to lead a men's team in one of Europe's top five leagues. The club has strongly condemned the "insane" sexist abuse Eta has faced on social media since her appointment, labeling such comments as embarrassing and nonsensical.

It’s just embarrassing. I’ve noticed it, but I also refuse to read or even just expose myself to that kind of nonsense because for me this is about quality, leadership quality.

Director of Football Horst Heldt emphasized that Eta's position is based purely on her "quality, leadership quality," and coaching ability, not her gender. He stated that the club has "100% confidence" in Eta and finds it "insane" that such prejudice still exists in this day and age. Heldt stressed that everyone at Union, from the stands to within the club, fully supports this decision.

Heldt highlighted Eta's extensive experience, including her time as an assistant coach at Union Berlin and her previous role as head coach for the U19s team. Her familiarity with the club, its atmosphere, and the players makes her a highly competent leader, he noted. The club remains focused on football and will not be distracted by the online abuse, with Eta set to lead her first training session as interim head coach.
