Union Member Gets Suspended Sentence for Ramming Police Officer with Van

A 60-year-old member of the Cargo Workers' Union has been handed a suspended prison sentence for driving a van into a police officer during a protest. The incident took place in April at a CU logistics center in Jinju, Gyeongnam province. The court found the man guilty of special obstruction of justice and violating the Assembly and Demonstration Act. He received a sentence of 1 year and 6 months in prison, suspended for 3 years, along with 160 hours of community service. The judge emphasized the severity of the act, noting the defendant's prior convictions for similar offenses and the use of a vehicle as a dangerous weapon. The court stated that the defendant's actions, which involved driving forward and braking suddenly to endanger multiple officers, were particularly egregious and had the potential to cause a major accident. However, the court also acknowledged that the defendant had deposited 10 million won for the injured police officers and that family members had submitted letters of appeal.
