Unions Mobilize for Lula's Campaign Launch, Demand Labor Agenda

Brazilian labor unions are gearing up to mobilize thousands of workers for the inaugural event of President Lula's re-election campaign, scheduled for August 16th. The unions intend to use the occasion not only to show their support but also to formally present their list of demands to the president.

The campaign launch will take place at the Vila Euclides stadium in São Bernardo do Campo, a venue chosen for its significant historical resonance with the labor movement. Union leaders emphasize that this location was the site of major strikes led by Lula in the late 1970s, making it a symbolic backdrop for the event.

Union leaders, including Ricardo Patah of UGT (General Union of Workers) and Adilson Araújo of CTB (Central of Workers and Employees of Brazil), expressed their commitment to Lula's candidacy. They credit his government with reducing unemployment and informality, implementing tax exemptions and reductions for employees, reopening the Ministry of Labor, and investing in social programs like Bolsa Família and Minha Casa, Minha Vida.

Beyond expressing support, the unions, through João Carlos Gonçalves, known as Juruna from Força Sindical, will present a document outlining their priorities. These include reducing working hours, creating quality jobs, increasing the minimum wage, strengthening collective bargaining, and regulating app-based work. The unions anticipate the event will draw approximately 30,000 people, underscoring their collective strength and engagement in the upcoming election.
