United States launches strikes against Iran

The United States military announced it has launched a series of strikes against Iran, citing Iran's alleged attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz as the reason. The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated its forces initiated "a series of powerful strikes" intended to impose a "heavy cost" on Iran for allegedly targeting civilian-crewed merchant ships in international waters.

CENTCOM specified that the U.S. strikes were a response to Iran's alleged attacks on three commercial ships traversing the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned that Tehran would take all necessary steps to safeguard its national interests and security.

Amidst rising tensions, several explosions were reported in southern Iran. The Fars news agency reported seeing black smoke behind a fish market in Bandar Abbas after a projectile struck a fishing pier, igniting several fishing boats. Iranian media also reported explosions in various locations, including areas around Sirik, Qeshm Island, and Bandar Abbas. Iranian state television indicated at least six explosions were heard on Qeshm Island, a strategically important location for monitoring shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, at least seven explosions were reported in the Sirik Port area, also situated along a strategic route in the Strait of Hormuz.
