UnitedHealth, CEO's family thank authorities for 'justice' after accused admits guilt

UnitedHealth and the family of Brian Thompson, the executive murdered in New York City in 2024, have thanked authorities for seeking justice after the accused, Luigi Mangione, admitted guilt in federal court. This admission marks a significant turn in the case.

"Brian Thompson lost his life prematurely due to an act of violence that devastated all who knew and loved him," UnitedHealth, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare which Thompson led, stated. "We are grateful to law enforcement for bringing Brian's killer to justice, and we continue to think of Brian's family and loved ones during these difficult times."

Mangione, 28, had previously maintained his innocence despite substantial evidence, including security footage and writings detailing his animosity towards the U.S. insurance system. However, during a court hearing, he admitted to seeking information about the conference Thompson was attending in Manhattan on December 4, 2024. "I shot Mr. Thompson and he died. I knew what I was doing was illegal," Mangione stated calmly before federal judge Margaret Garnett, as victim's family members watched in silence.

Mangione's guilty plea to the two federal charges of harassment linked to Thompson's murder, the most serious ones, carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. "This is an important step toward justice for Brian and our family," Thompson's family said in a statement. "While nothing will alleviate the pain of losing him, we are grateful that the federal justice system has held the perpetrator of this heinous act accountable. We now hope the court ensures the sentence reflects the gravity of this crime."

Sentencing is scheduled for December 18. However, a separate state case concerning Thompson's murder is still pending. In that case, Mangione faces 25 years to life imprisonment, and his defense has requested its dismissal, citing double jeopardy concerns.
