University of Ghana approves AI policy to guide ethical use

The University of Ghana has officially adopted an Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy, establishing guidelines for the ethical and responsible integration of AI in academic and administrative functions. Vice-Chancellor Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo announced the policy during the university's congregation, where 1,884 students graduated.

The new policy is designed to provide clear direction for faculty, staff, and students on leveraging AI technologies in teaching, learning, research, and administration. A key focus is ensuring that the use of AI adheres to ethical standards while maintaining robust data security and privacy protections across the university.

Alongside the AI policy, the university has also approved a new Teaching and Learning Policy. This policy aims to foster an environment conducive to innovative and high-quality education, outlining the roles and responsibilities of academic units and promoting inclusive and equitable access to resources for all students and faculty.

Professor Amfo also provided updates on several student support initiatives. The 'One Student, One Laptop' program has expanded, with 152 students recently receiving devices, bringing the total distributed to 777. Additionally, the university's 'Hotspot Comfort Zones,' offering reliable Wi-Fi and study facilities, have been enhanced with new locations, some sponsored by alumni and prominent figures.

The university had also approved a Teaching and Learning Policy to provide an enabling environment for innovative and quality teaching and learning, while guiding all academic units on their roles and responsibilities.
