University probes excommunication of student over hateful video

The University of Duisburg-Essen is examining the potential excommunication of a political science student accused of creating a deeply offensive video. The university confirmed it is investigating the student, who is reportedly a member of the CDU party from Krefeld, following the emergence of a video containing hateful rhetoric.

The video, which has been partially blurred, allegedly shows the student suggesting violent acts against Muslims, including the phrase "Now we gas the Muslims." He is also quoted as saying, "When I'm high up, I'll deport them all. Actually, I'd rather have them killed. Gassed or something."

The university cited the North Rhine-Westphalia Higher Education Act, which allows for the excommunication of students who violate the dignity of other university members based on origin or religion, thereby creating an environment of intimidation and humiliation. University spokesperson Astrid Bergmeister stated that such an excommunication would be a first in the institution's history.

State prosecutors in Krefeld have been investigating the case for five weeks to determine if there is a preliminary suspicion of incitement to hatred. Prosecutor Charlotte Dorn noted that the investigation also aims to verify the video's authenticity and the channels through which it was disseminated. The CDU Krefeld has initiated disciplinary proceedings against the 23-year-old student and suspended his party membership rights pending a final decision.
