UNIZIK lecturers begin indefinite strike over incomplete August salaries

Lecturers at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka began an indefinite strike on Monday after the university failed to pay their full August 2026 salaries.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities’ UNIZIK chapter said its congress resolved to withdraw all academic and administrative services under a standing resolution of the union’s National Executive Council. That resolution allows branches to stop work when salaries remain unpaid after the third day of the following month.

In a statement signed by chapter chairperson Innocent Nnubia and secretary Osita Nnajiofor, the union said September 7 had passed without complete payment. It said members had faced the same “ugly and frustrating experience” more than three times.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU-UNIZIK Branch, at its Congress held today, Monday, September 7, 2026, resolved to withdraw her services in compliance with the standing Resolution of ASUU National Executive Council on non-payment of salaries.

The union urged the university authorities and President Bola Tinubu, identified as the university’s visitor, to ensure that all August salaries were paid and that the problem did not recur. The strike will continue until every member receives the outstanding amount.

UNIZIK Director of Information and Public Relations Aloysius Attah responded to questions about the action with: “No comment.”
