What looked like an extreme soda refill at a Costco in Aguascalientes quickly became a viral controversy. A video showed a man, accompanied by his family, filling two containers that each held 20 liters with soda from the store’s beverage machine.

The scene drew criticism because Costco allows customers to refill soda after buying the first cup, but the quantity shown in the video led users to question whether the family was taking advantage of the policy. The person recording the footage said an employee approached the family after seeing the containers and told them they could not continue. The man and his companions then left the store.

The story took a different turn after the video spread online. A TikToker went to the Aguascalientes branch and asked the manager what had happened and whether the customer had actually violated a rule.

According to the manager, the man had purchased 100 hot dogs, and the soda he was collecting belonged to that purchase. The manager reportedly added that, considering the amount of food bought, the customer had taken less soda than he was entitled to. “I spoke with the manager, and he told me that the man bought the hot dogs [...] that soda belonged to him,” the TikToker said.

The manager also reportedly said that situations of this kind are common, suggesting the video did not necessarily show a customer trying to exploit the store. The episode nevertheless continued to circulate online after the competing accounts emerged.
