Unthinkable disaster in Paros: 12,000 acres turn to ash

An "unthinkable disaster" has struck the Greek island of Paros, where a massive wildfire consumed around 12,000 acres of land. The blaze inflicted a severe blow to the island's natural environment, transforming vast areas into a scorched black landscape. Thick smoke still rises from active hotspots, indicating the fire was not fully extinguished for nearly 24 hours after it ignited.

The fire originated at the island's landfill, causing significant ecological devastation. Among the destroyed areas were ancient cedar trees, a species known for its slow regeneration. Strong winds hampered firefighting efforts, preventing aerial operations and contributing to a major flare-up that expanded the fire's reach.

Authorities have arrested four people in connection with the fire's cause. Those taken into custody include the mayor of Paros, the deputy mayor for sanitation, the supervisor of the landfill management company, and a garbage truck driver. The fire, which began on Wednesday, July 29, highlights the vulnerability of the island's natural beauty to such destructive events.
