UPM launches blueprint to integrate sustainability and planetary health

Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has launched the UPM Planetary Health and Sustainability Blueprint, a comprehensive strategic framework designed to bolster the university's commitment to sustainability and planetary health. This initiative places planetary health at the core of UPM's development, integrating human well-being, environmental preservation, food security, and socio-economic development into a cohesive agenda.

The blueprint extends beyond environmental conservation, aiming for a holistic transformation encompassing governance, education, research, innovation, campus operations, and community engagement. UPM intends to cultivate sustainable living practices among its community members. As a research university with a strong foundation in agriculture and life sciences, UPM plans to leverage its campus as a 'living laboratory.' This approach will facilitate the translation of science-based solutions into tangible actions that benefit society at local, national, and global levels.

UPM's strategy is guided by the principle that human health is inseparable from environmental health, introducing the concept of 'Planetary Stewardship' as a fundamental principle for decision-making, research, and policy development across the university. This approach is supported by talent development, digitalization, good governance, and strengthening key components such as biodiversity, energy, water, food security, and health and well-being, all interconnected for building a more resilient campus and society.

The university aspires to embed sustainable living practices into the daily lifestyle of its students, staff, and the wider community. With a vast campus spanning Serdang and Bintulu, supported by research centers, farms, forests, and a diverse student body from over 75 countries, UPM possesses a unique ecosystem. This allows for direct implementation and study of planetary health research, education, and knowledge transfer in real-world settings. UPM aims to be a regional leader in planetary health by enhancing interdisciplinary research, impactful innovation, transformative education, and community engagement.
