Ural Owl Attacks Photographer, Causing Rare Eye Injury

Pirjo Miettinen was filming a Ural owl near her cabin on the evening of May 9th when the bird unexpectedly attacked her, inflicting an eye injury. The incident occurred after Miettinen heard a strange noise, resembling a dog's bark, and went to investigate, discovering the owl perched on a birch tree.

While Miettinen was initially delighted to see the owl, her husband had previously spotted owls and heard their wingbeats around the cabin, though the bird had remained hidden from him. The owl's defense of its territory escalated into an attack, leaving Miettinen with an injury that necessitated a hospital stay.

According to Aleksi Kallio, a retina surgeon, the type of eye injury sustained by Miettinen, caused by a bird's talon, is extremely rare. Ornithologist Pertti Saurola has decades of experience with nesting owls, which are known to defend their territories aggressively, but such a direct and severe injury to a human observer is uncommon.

The attack has forced Miettinen onto sick leave, highlighting the potential risks involved even when observing wildlife. Although owls are known to protect their nests, this incident underscores the unpredictable nature of animal encounters.
