Uruguay begins process for visa-free entry for Chinese citizens

Uruguay's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Thursday the initiation of a process to grant visa-free entry to Chinese citizens. The announcement was made by Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin during a farewell event for the Chinese Ambassador to Uruguay, Huang Yazhong, who is concluding his diplomatic mission.

This measure, directed by President Yamandú Orsi, is intended to particularly encourage the growing tourism from China. It also serves as a reciprocal action to China's own visa exemption policy for Uruguayan citizens, which began in early 2025. The ministry anticipates that this initiative will substantially increase tourist numbers, a sector vital for the country's economic growth.

China had previously extended its visa exemption policy for travelers from over 40 countries, including Uruguay, until December 31, 2026. This policy allows citizens of eligible countries to enter China for tourism, business, visiting family or friends, or transit for up to 30 days without a visa. This move by Beijing is part of broader efforts to revive tourism and international ties following the pandemic-induced border closures.
