Uruguay Expresses Solidarity with Colombia After Major Earthquake

Uruguay has formally expressed its solidarity with Colombia after a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the South American nation, resulting in over 100 fatalities and widespread structural damage. The Uruguayan Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement conveying condolences to the Colombian government and the families of the victims.

"The Oriental Republic of Uruguay expresses its solidarity with the Republic of Colombia in the face of the earthquake that occurred today, with its epicenter in the Colombian Pacific, which caused the loss of human lives in various cities and rural areas of the country," the ministry stated. The earthquake's epicenter was located in San José del Palmar, in the southeastern part of the Chocó department, and its tremors were felt across much of Colombia, as well as in parts of Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama.

Crucially, the Uruguayan foreign ministry confirmed that no Uruguayan citizens have been reported injured or deceased as a result of the disaster. However, the ministry acknowledged that some Uruguayan tourists and businesses have been affected, with reports of hotels and flights being impacted. Uruguayan authorities are actively monitoring the situation to provide necessary assistance.

In response to the event, the Uruguayan Embassy in Colombia has provided emergency contact information for its citizens. These include Colombia's general emergency line (123), a consular emergency phone number (+57 314 733 8297), and an email address for the Consulate of Uruguay in Bogotá. The earthquake caused significant material damage to airports, hospitals, and roads in several departments, including Chocó, Caldas, Risaralda, and Valle del Cauca.
