Uruguay Ministry of Environment Seeks Lawyer for Biodiversity Role

Uruguay's Ministry of Environment is seeking a consultant lawyer to bolster its work on biodiversity conservation and sustainable use. The position, part of the URU/21/004 Project, offers a monthly salary of $91,393 plus VAT for a 30-hour work week, with a contract extending to October 31, 2026.

The consultant will provide legal counsel and representation for the National Directorate of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (Dinabise). Key responsibilities include advising on the National System of Protected Areas, wildlife conservation, biosecurity, coastal and marine management, and ecosystem restoration. The role also involves drafting legal reports and regulations, identifying legal gaps, and supporting policy development.

Tasks will include participating in meetings and workshops in Montevideo and other parts of the country, as well as handling legal representation in court. The ministry notes that these functions may be supplemented with other related consultancy tasks.

Applicants must be qualified lawyers from the University of the Republic or a recognized institution, holding a law degree. Experience in environmental law, public and procedural law, litigation, and English proficiency are considered advantageous. The ministry also values teamwork, continuous learning, and a results-oriented approach.
