Uruguay University Suspends Gaza Documentary Screening After Hamas Collaboration Claims

A planned screening of the Mexican documentary "La Gran Palestina" at the University of the Republic's Faculty of Information and Communication (FIC) in Uruguay was suspended after facing strong criticism from opposition leaders. The film, reportedly made in collaboration with Hamas, was scheduled for Wednesday but was called off. The student union (Ceico), which organized the event, issued a statement on social media asserting they were unaware of the film's specific characteristics as depicted in a flyer that circulated online. Ceico clarified that the flyer was not their work and was distributed without their knowledge. They reaffirmed their commitment to improving their processes to prevent similar situations in the future. The union stated their intention was never to create conflict but to gather for film viewings and discussions. They also reiterated their support for the Palestinian cause and their right to exist. Sources within the faculty indicated that both the event's organization and its subsequent suspension were handled by Ceico. The Federation of University Students of Uruguay (FEUU) also stated they were not involved. The documentary, released in 2025, is directed by Mexican Rafael Rangel and claims collaboration with "resistance fighters (Hamas)." It aims to cover events in Gaza between January and March 2025 following a now-reversed ceasefire announcement with Israel. Opposition lawmakers had strongly condemned the screening, labeling it "terrorist propaganda." Some legislators reportedly received messages from the Israeli Embassy thanking them for their opposition to the event.
