Uruguayan Brewery Workers Protest Amid Company Review and Competitiveness Concerns

Workers from Uruguay's National Brewery (FNC) staged a protest outside the Legislative Palace, voicing concerns over the company's announced review of its operations. The demonstration comes after FNC extended the unemployment insurance for workers at its Minas plant through August, while also initiating a "general review" of all its activities in Uruguay, including the Montevideo plant and its distribution network.

The workers are demanding clarity regarding the future of both the Minas and Montevideo facilities. FNC has cited a "significant loss of competitiveness in recent years" compared to imported products as the driving force behind this review. The company stated in a prior communication that imported beers benefit from "more favorable conditions and rules of the game" than the national industry, posing a threat to the sector's survival.

Adding to the tension, workers from the Montevideo plant resolved not to return to work after the annual maintenance shutdown, which concluded last Friday. The company had planned to resume operations on August 1st. Meanwhile, tripartite meetings are ongoing at the National Labor Directorate (Dinatra) as negotiations continue. The workers await a response from the company between Thursday and Friday of this week.
