US airman faces rare criminal charges for criticizing Trump

A U.S. Air Force major, Jason Watson, has been formally charged under the Uniform Code of Military Justice for making critical remarks about President Donald Trump. The charges, which include violations for "contemptuous" remarks, disobeying orders, and conduct unbecoming an officer, are considered rare.

Watson's legal troubles stem from several high-profile actions: an interview with the "Defenders of our Republic" Substack newsletter in June, a protest in uniform at the U.S. Capitol in July, and a CNN interview on August 17. The Uniform Code of Military Justice prohibits troops from using "contemptuous words" against the president or participating in overtly partisan activities in uniform.

While minor infractions of these rules are often handled informally, Watson's case has drawn significant attention. He was arrested twice, first during his Capitol protest and again shortly after his CNN interview. His attorney, Chris Mutimer, informed CNN that Watson has been placed in "pre-trial confinement," a measure akin to bail denial in civilian courts, pending the legal proceedings.

Air Force Secretary Troy Meink previously emphasized the need for all airmen to adhere to conduct, political participation, and uniform regulations. The charges against Watson also include violating Defense Department rules against supporting partisan causes, wearing his uniform at a political press conference, breaking leave regulations, and refusing to wear his uniform to work. His attorney described Watson as being in solitary confinement for his safety, asserting that the major "truly believes in everything about our constitution and what it represents, and the oath that he swore."
