US ambassador says Israel has responsibility to ensure West Bank Palestinians’ safety

US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee said Israel’s government has a responsibility to protect Palestinians in the West Bank after a sharp increase in settler attacks.

“One of the messages that we have been sending and we will continue to send is that people in these communities have a right to live with a level of security and safety, and that the government has a responsibility to make sure that that happens,” Huckabee told reporters on Saturday.

He spoke while meeting Palestinian-Americans in a Palestinian town in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Those he met included families of US citizens killed by Israeli settlers, according to the report.

Huckabee also addressed proposals from Israeli ministers on expelling Gaza’s two million residents from the war-battered territory. “I can tell you categorically there is no plan of the Israelis to displace people out of Gaza against their will,” he said.
