US Army Dismisses General Leading Ukraine Support Corps in Poland

The U.S. Army has suddenly removed Lieutenant General Charles Costanza from his command of the V Corps, a critical unit involved in coordinating support for Ukraine and managing the U.S. military presence on NATO's eastern flank. The dismissal, confirmed by the Army, occurred about two months prior to Costanza's planned departure from the role he assumed in April 2024.

The V Corps, with elements stationed in Poland, has become increasingly central to U.S. European Command operations since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The corps is instrumental in channeling American military aid to Kyiv and overseeing the U.S. troop presence along NATO's eastern frontier.

While the Army has acknowledged Costanza's removal, it has not publicly disclosed the specific reasons. A spokesperson stated that the circumstances remain unclear and that the matter has been referred to the appropriate military authorities. Two U.S. officials indicated to journalists that the decision was not politically motivated and was not initiated by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. Brigadier General John Mountford, deputy commander for operational readiness, has taken over as interim commander. This change occurs amid a period of significant leadership shifts within the U.S. military. Over twenty senior officers have been dismissed or reassigned under Hegseth's tenure, often without public explanation.
