US arrests nearly 50,000 immigrants in July, highest figure of Trump era

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) apprehended almost 50,000 individuals in July, marking the highest monthly total recorded during President Donald Trump's tenure. Data from the University of California, Berkeley's 'Deportation Data Project' indicates that ICE detained 49,571 non-citizens last month. This figure signifies a 15% surge compared to the 43,021 arrests made in June.

The July arrest total is the highest of Trump's second term. The administration has reportedly pushed for increased arrests with the stated objective of achieving one million deportations per year. However, the cumulative number of detentions has not yet reached the White House's ambitious target.

For the current fiscal year, which began on October 1, 2025, and concludes in September 2026, ICE has detained a total of 368,135 individuals, according to the project's data. Arrests are expected to continue at similar levels in August. In a significant operation between August 1 and 14, the Department of Homeland Security reported the apprehension of over 1,300 undocumented immigrants in Maryland and Virginia, noting that these arrests proceeded despite sanctuary policies in some counties within those states.

The Trump administration's immigration policies have drawn considerable criticism, particularly following incidents where several individuals lost their lives, including two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis in January. Immigration policy remains a cornerstone of Trump's campaign platform, and its perceived aggressiveness may be affecting his standing with voters. A recent poll indicates that half of Americans believe the mass deportation campaign is excessively harsh, with less than 90 days remaining until the midterm elections.
