US attacks Iran for first time in a month

The latest U.S. attack on Iran broke a month-long pause in confirmed American strikes and immediately brought threats of retaliation from Tehran. U.S. Central Command said it observed members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard preparing to launch missiles carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz before the strike on two launch sites on Larak island.

Iranian media reported explosions near Larak. The Revolutionary Guard said several of its soldiers and other Iranians were killed or wounded. Its spokesman, Hossein Mohebi, called the attack “a fatal mistake by the Trump regime in the economic war” and said the enemy would face military and economic consequences.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard also claimed that ballistic missiles hit two U.S. bases in Jordan, identifying them as King Hussein base and Al-Azraq base. Jordan’s armed forces said they shot down eight missiles that entered Jordanian airspace. There was no immediate U.S. or Jordanian confirmation that either base had been hit.

The episode was accompanied by an unverified claim from President Donald Trump that Iran’s main oil-export hub, Kharg island, was being “blown to pieces.” Trump posted the statement on Truth Social alongside an AI-generated video showing explosions over the island. No signs of an attack on Kharg were reported, and neither the White House nor the Pentagon immediately responded to questions.

Kharg handled about 90% of Iran’s oil exports before the war began on February 28. Meanwhile, commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remained at a low level. Trump said the strait was open and that 24 vessels had passed the previous week, compared with about 130 vessels a day before the war.
