US Begins Review of Military Presence in Europe, Eyes Shift in Defense Responsibility

The United States has initiated a comprehensive review of its military presence in Europe, signaling a strategic shift in NATO's defense responsibilities. U.S. officials announced the review on Monday, with Deputy Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby stating that the goal is to accelerate NATO's transition towards Europe assuming primary responsibility for its conventional defense.

"This will be a real review focused on ensuring that NATO is moving quickly and decisively towards Europe taking the lead responsibility for its conventional defense," Colby said in June, according to reports. He added that the outcome of this review is intended to foster a "stronger, fairer, and more sustainable alliance."

The review comes amid repeated criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding European allies' defense spending and contributions. Trump has consistently urged NATO members to meet their defense spending targets. Additionally, the U.S. is increasingly focusing its strategic attention on China, prompting a reallocation of military resources globally.

As part of this transition, the Pentagon has informed allies about a worldwide reduction in military assets available for NATO operations. This strategic realignment underscores Washington's desire for European members to shoulder a greater burden for their own security.
