US border chief defends plan for stun gloves for ICE officers

Tom Homan, the U.S. border chief, has publicly defended a controversial plan by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to equip officers with specialized gloves that deliver electric shocks. Homan described these devices as a crucial tool to help officers end confrontations without resorting to lethal force.

In an interview with Fox News, Homan explained that the gloves serve as an additional measure to ensure compliance when individuals do not cooperate. He emphasized that the goal is not to immediately escalate to deadly force, but to provide officers with a range of options. "You can't just go from zero to 100, and the first thing you reach for is not deadly force," he stated.

The plan involves an investment of up to $20 million to purchase thousands of "electrical diversion and de-escalation devices," known as G.L.O.V.E. (Generated Low Output Voltage Emitter). According to reports, these gloves deliver painful shocks when they come into contact with bare skin and are manufactured by Compliant Technologies LLC. They have already been adopted by some correctional facilities and law enforcement agencies.

Homan countered these criticisms by arguing that the stun gloves could help prevent incidents like the six fatal shootings by immigration authorities since last year. He asserted that ICE officers would gain another less-lethal option, comparable to stun guns and pepper spray, for use in potentially volatile situations within detention centers and on the streets.
