US-Canada trade talks collapse, tariffs imposed

Trade talks between the United States and Canada collapsed late Friday, prompting the U.S. to announce a 50% tariff on specific Canadian imports valued at approximately $20 billion. These tariffs are set to take effect shortly after midnight.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney halted the negotiations and declared retaliatory measures of equal financial value. He instructed Canadian negotiators to return to Ottawa, stating that while they worked hard until the last minute, last-minute changes to the U.S. proposal were unfair and economically unviable. Carney emphasized that the goal was to secure the best possible deal for Canada, not just any deal under a deadline.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer confirmed the breakdown, telling Politico that Canada rejected the agreement under the proposed terms. Greer indicated that new Canadian demands had disrupted the balance achieved in recent days. The White House had previously stated in July that the tariffs, which would affect goods like wine, hockey sticks, furniture, and dairy products, were a response to Canada's "discriminatory treatment of American products," including autos, alcohol, and dairy.
