US Carrier Deploys Laser Weapon System Against Drones

In a significant display of naval power and technological advancement, the U.S. Navy has released striking images of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush conducting tests of its new anti-drone laser weapon system, LOCUST. This marks a historic moment, as it is the first time the U.S. Navy has publicly shared footage of a laser weapon system in operation from one of its carriers. The images, captured in October but released as the Bush carrier arrived in the Middle East, are seen by analysts as a strategic move to bolster U.S. negotiating positions in ongoing talks with Iran.

The LOCUST system, a collaborative effort between the U.S. Navy, Army, and Applied Technology, is a 20kW-class high-energy laser weapon. During the live-fire tests conducted on the Bush's deck, LOCUST proved highly effective, successfully detecting, tracking, and neutralizing multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The Navy highlighted this success as a crucial milestone in the development of deployable directed-energy weapon systems.

Developed by Applied Technology, the 'LOCUST' system derives its name from the concept of clearing swarms of drones ('Locust') in a 'Low-Cost' manner. Compared to the millions of dollars spent on missiles to intercept drones, LOCUST engages each threat for less than $5 (approximately 7,000 Korean Won) by utilizing electricity. This cost-effectiveness, combined with its effectiveness against drone threats, makes it a highly attractive asset for naval defense.

The recent conflicts in the Middle East have underscored the critical importance of protecting naval assets from drone attacks. The successful demonstration of the LOCUST system on the USS George H.W.
