US CBP launches remote baggage screening for flights from Doha to JFK

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has introduced a new system to screen checked baggage for Qatar Airways flights before they even land at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. The International Remote Baggage Inspection System (IRBS) allows U.S. agents to examine X-ray images of luggage transmitted securely from Doha while the aircraft is en route.

This technology, a collaboration between CBP, Qatar's Ministry of Interior, Qatar Airways, and JFK's Terminal One, aims to detect potential threats before bags enter the country. It complements existing security measures without replacing them. The system also offers a benefit to eligible connecting passengers, allowing them to proceed directly to their next flight without retrieving and rechecking their luggage, unless further inspection is deemed necessary.

The IRBS is part of CBP's Airport Modernization Plan, a strategy to implement new technologies that optimize border controls and enhance passenger experiences while maintaining high security standards. The goal is to expedite arrivals for passengers meeting specific requirements and reduce overall processing times.
