US CENTCOM launches multinational attack drone task force

US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the establishment of Task Force Falcon Strike on August 13th, marking the creation of the Middle East's first multi-domain, multinational attack drone task force. This new unit is designed to operate one-way attack drones across air, surface, and subsurface domains, with personnel drawn from the US and regional allies.

The formation of Falcon Strike builds upon the foundation laid by Task Force Scorpion Strike, established nine months prior as the US military's inaugural dedicated one-way attack drone squadron in the region. Scorpion Strike achieved notable milestones, including the first launch of an aerial attack drone from a US Navy warship in December and its involvement in Operation Epic Fury and strikes on Iranian port facilities in July.

Adm. Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander, emphasized that Falcon Strike will leverage these successes by integrating innovative contributions from regional partners. "Integrating and deploying our new capabilities together will help us rapidly realize the new possibilities that are on the horizon," Cooper stated. CENTCOM has initiated consultations with regional partners and extended formal invitations for participation.

The announcement occurs against a backdrop of persistent US-Iran tensions and precedes the anticipated withdrawal of remaining US forces from Iraq by September 30th. It also underscores the increasing significance of unmanned systems, a domain where Iran and its allies have demonstrated operational experience through repeated drone and unmanned vessel attacks on regional targets.

Concurrently, Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Defense reported progress on a parallel regional initiative. The third planning meeting of the Multinational Maritime Defense Coalition convened in Jeddah, with representatives from 39 countries. Fifteen nations have signed a joint statement, and 13 have completed accession procedures, signaling the coalition's formal institutional and operational activation. Saudi Arabia is set to provide the coalition commander, with Pakistan supplying the deputy commander for the initial term. The coalition aims to bolster collective maritime security, protect freedom of navigation, and ensure the continuity of international trade.
