US concludes latest strikes on Iran after ship attack

The United States declared on Sunday that its latest round of airstrikes against Iran has concluded. These strikes were a direct retaliation for an earlier Iranian attack on a Cyprus-flagged vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

According to a statement from the US Central Command (Centcom), American forces targeted around 140 Iranian military objectives using precision munitions. These attacks were carried out by fighter jets, drones, and naval vessels. The targeted sites included Iran's missile and drone infrastructure, naval assets, ammunition depots, communication systems, and coastal surveillance posts.

Iranian state media reported multiple explosions in the province of Bushehr, which houses a nuclear facility, as well as in various locations near the Strait of Hormuz. As of now, there have been no confirmed reports of damage or casualties. In response, Tehran has launched missiles and drones toward Middle Eastern nations that host American military bases, including Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain.

The Centcom initially reported the start of a new strike campaign against Iran early Sunday morning, following Iran's bombing of the Cyprus-flagged ship. The command stated that Iran's attack on the container ship caused a fire and damaged its engine room, leading to a crew member's disappearance. US forces justified their actions as an effort to degrade Iran's capacity to attack other vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran, in turn, announced that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed indefinitely.
