US congressman questions FIFA chief over contacts with Donald Trump

He also requested Infantino appear before the committee for a hearing if he visits the United States. Raskin's inquiry stems from concerns that FIFA may have sought favorable decisions from the Trump administration through questionable favors. These concerns are amplified by FIFA's decision to award a newly established peace prize to Trump, particularly after he did not receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Additionally, during the World Cup, criticism arose when the suspension of US striker Folarin Balogun was lifted, reportedly after Trump contacted Infantino, allowing the player to participate in a knockout match. FIFA stated that the disciplinary commission, which is formally independent, made this decision. Raskin also highlighted that FIFA rents office space in Trump Tower, a lease that could cost around $600,000 annually at market rates. The congressman argued that this, along with the "comically fake" peace prize, suggests FIFA hopes to gain advantages from Trump and his administration.
