US Defense Secretary Warns of 'Invasion of Dangerous Ideologies' in Europe

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has declared that Europe is facing an "invasion of dangerous ideologies" arriving by sea, drawing a connection between migration and the historical significance of the D-Day landings.

Speaking at ceremonies marking the 82nd anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy, Austin echoed rhetoric previously used by the Trump administration, which has criticized European nations for perceived weak defenses, ineffective migration management, and stifling nationalist voices. "Unfortunately, today various European beaches are being occupied by force by various, dangerous ideologies," Austin stated at the Normandy American Cemetery.

He posed a rhetorical question, asking, "When will European capitals do something about this invasion, or is it too late? I pray it is not, and I believe it is not."

Austin delivered his address amidst commemorations of the D-Day landings, which marked the beginning of Western Europe's liberation from Nazi occupation. Standing before the graves of 9,387 American soldiers, he emphasized the importance of allied unity and sacrifice. "The men buried here fought in the ranks of a military alliance in which each partner contributed its measure of industry, courage, and sacrifice," he said, contrasting this with "empty slogans, luxury summits, or communiqués."

Underscoring the principle that "peace is guaranteed only through strength," Austin urged allies to stand alongside the United States. He announced his decision not to attend a planned international ceremony to dedicate his time solely to the American event.
