US Democrats rebuke Trump for easing sanctions on Beijing, Hong Kong officials

A group of prominent US Democratic lawmakers has voiced strong disapproval of President Donald Trump's decision to ease sanctions on certain Chinese and Hong Kong officials. In a four-page letter, the lawmakers stated their serious concern over the move, arguing that these officials were complicit in Beijing's erosion of Hong Kong's autonomy.

The legislators questioned the durability of US policy toward Hong Kong, demanding a direct response from the administration regarding the implications of this decision. The relaxation of sanctions occurred after the US allowed a designation of Hong Kong as a national emergency concern to lapse on July 14. While a 2020 executive order remains, classifying Hong Kong as not sufficiently autonomous, this modification removed nine officials from a sanctions list.

This adjustment effectively lifted restrictions on the targeted individuals, granting them access to the US banking system and their US assets. Additionally, 39 other individuals, including former chief executives Carrie Lam and John Lee, were moved to a different sanctions list with some restrictions eased, such as a ban on importing goods. The US Treasury noted that these changes did not affect related US laws like the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019 or the Hong Kong Autonomy Act of 2020.
