US Denied Him Entry, Now UEFA Bestows Major Honor on Referee Artan

Somali referee Omar Artan is set to officiate the UEFA Super Cup final between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa, a prestigious assignment that marks his first match in Europe. This appointment comes as a significant honor, especially after a challenging period where he was denied entry into the United States for the 2026 World Cup.

Artan, 34, found himself in the spotlight before the World Cup when U.S. authorities refused him entry at Miami airport. The State Department cited alleged connections to individuals suspected of belonging to terrorist organizations as the reason for his ineligibility. Artan has vehemently denied these accusations, which caused considerable consternation in Somalia, where he was welcomed as a hero upon his return.

"It was a very difficult period," Artan admitted in an interview published on UEFA's website. "Many sympathized with me because it is extremely exhausting when you work for years to achieve a project and ultimately cannot complete it."

FIFA President Gianni Infantino acknowledged the situation, stating, "What happened to him is truly unfortunate, but we cannot control everything." In response to the U.S. entry ban, UEFA extended an invitation to Artan for the Super Cup match. "I was lucky, but I worked hard to get here and I am truly proud of it," Artan told UEFA.

UEFA's decision to appoint Artan is viewed not only as a recognition of his capabilities, particularly after becoming the first Somali referee at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, but also as a political statement. This move gains added significance amid a recent conflict between UEFA and FIFA President Infantino over the latter's plans for private investment in the global football body. The protocol signed with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to foster cooperation also underpins this decision.
