US Embassy in Abuja stops routine visa processing and directs applicants to Lagos

Routine visa services at the US Embassy in Abuja are no longer available. Applicants in Nigeria must now use the US Consulate General in Lagos for routine applications.

The change took effect on August 1, 2026, according to the latest visa advisory. Applicants who already had appointments in Abuja will still be attended to, although some appointments may have been moved to new dates.

The US authorities advised applicants with Abuja appointments to check their email for updated appointment information. They also said applicants holding an unused and still-valid MRV visa application fee receipt can use it to schedule a new appointment at the Lagos consulate.

Applicants have been directed to the official visa appointment website for information about services, locations and operating hours. The change means people seeking routine US visa services in Nigeria must make arrangements to process their applications through Lagos.

Routine visa services are only available at Consulate General Lagos. Effective August 1, 2026, U.S. Embassy Abuja no longer processes routine visa applications. All applicants who already have scheduled appointments will be honored; however, those dates may have been rescheduled.
