US Envoy: ASEAN's Role is Vital for the United States

The United States Ambassador to ASEAN, Kevin Kim, underscored the critical strategic partnership between the U.S. and the Southeast Asian bloc, emphasizing its importance for navigating agendas across the Indo-Pacific region. "ASEAN is very important for the US," Kim stated during a press conference in Jakarta.

Kim noted that the bond between the U.S. and ASEAN continues to strengthen through agreements and shared visions. He recalled President Donald Trump's attendance at the 47th ASEAN Summit and the 13th ASEAN-U.S. Summit in Kuala Lumpur in October 2025, signaling high-level engagement.

Cooperation spans key areas including critical mineral supply chains, artificial intelligence development, future technologies, and establishing mutual norms and values. Kim revealed that senior U.S. officials stressed Southeast Asia's pivotal role in shaping 21st-century global dynamics, with the U.S. viewing the "trajectory of the 21st century" as being defined by ASEAN.

The ambassador's visit to Jakarta, which included a meeting with the ASEAN Secretary-General, and the celebration of the 250th anniversary of American independence, both served to reinforce Washington's commitment to the region. Citing U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Kim expressed hope that the U.S. and ASEAN can jointly forge a peaceful, stable, and prosperous future for the Indo-Pacific.
