US envoys Witkoff, Kushner arrive in Moscow for talks on peace in Ukraine, sources say

Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Moscow for talks on the war in Ukraine, where Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev met them. A Reuters witness saw a motorcade carrying the three men leave Moscow’s governmental airport and head toward the city.

Dmitriev has participated in the envoys’ previous meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He also told Reuters in June that he had stayed in contact with US negotiators during a pause in their visits to Russia. US President Donald Trump said on Friday that Washington had a fresh concrete proposal to end the war, now in its fifth year, but he did not explain what it involved.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the envoys would travel to Ukraine on Sunday after their Moscow visit. He later wrote on X that Russia had struck two Ukrainian airports before the planned Kyiv trip. The article also reports that a Russian drone attack hit the headquarters of Ukraine’s SBU security service in Kyiv, during the 10th consecutive day of heavy attacks on the capital.

The diplomatic effort faces a wide gap between the Russian and Ukrainian positions. The Kremlin said the terms Putin outlined two years ago remain “unshakeable”: Ukraine would have to cede all of four regions claimed by Russia and abandon its plan to join NATO.

Since the last peace talks in February, both sides have intensified long-range air attacks deep inside the other’s territory, while fighting at sea has also escalated. Ground front lines have changed little, with Russia making gradual gains in its effort to capture the whole of Ukraine’s Donbas region. Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian oil refineries have contributed to fuel shortages and higher prices for Russian motorists, while attacks on large warehouses linked mostly to Wildberries have affected the consumer economy.
