US girl, 8, dies from brain-eating amoeba after lake swim

A tragic incident has claimed the life of an 8-year-old girl in Louisiana, who died after swimming in a local lake. Health officials suspect the cause was infection by Naegleria fowleri, a rare amoeba commonly known as the 'brain-eating amoeba.' The girl, Lilian Smart, lived near Ruston and is believed to have contracted the infection while swimming in Claiborne Lake, approximately 30 miles away. She was hospitalized with a fever, later developing double vision and severe brain swelling. Despite intensive care in the ICU, her condition deteriorated, and she passed away shortly after her eighth birthday. Her family shared their profound sorrow on Facebook, explaining that the brain damage was too extensive for her young body to recover from, even with maximum medical intervention. Naegleria fowleri thrives in warm freshwater and can cause a deadly infection called primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) when water containing the amoeba enters the nose. Health authorities emphasize that infection cannot occur from drinking contaminated water, nor can it be transmitted from person to person.
