US House Democrat asks Musk to answer for polluting xAI data centers

U.S. Representative Frank Pallone, the leading Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, has demanded that Elon Musk provide documents and answers concerning the environmental and public health consequences of his xAI Colossus data center operations in Tennessee and Mississippi. Pallone sent a letter to Musk on Wednesday seeking detailed information.

The request includes data on the turbines used at the Colossus 1 and Colossus 2 artificial intelligence data centers, emissions records, permitting documents, and any communications with government officials. Pallone also asked for analyses of the facilities' emissions, power consumption, and water usage. He further proposed arranging a site visit for committee staff.

Pallone, a Democrat from New Jersey, stated that Musk's SpaceX, the parent company of xAI, had been uncooperative in providing sufficient information during a previous meeting with committee staff. He accused the company of demonstrating "disregard for the health and well-being of local communities."

This demand comes amid increasing scrutiny of the substantial energy demands and environmental effects associated with AI data centers, as technology firms rapidly expand their computing capabilities. Reuters reported earlier this month that Musk's xAI had installed 59 natural gas turbines for its Colossus 2 project without obtaining federal clean-air permits. Communications between regulators and company representatives revealed that these turbines were situated near communities that are predominantly Black, and their potential emissions exceeded levels that typically necessitate federal permits.
