US Immigration Agency ICE Plans to Deploy Robot Dogs for Deportation Raids

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency is reportedly planning to acquire advanced quadruped robots, commonly known as robot dogs, for use in deportation raids. Documents indicate the agency intends to allocate up to two million dollars for the purchase of these machines from the company Boston Dynamics, with a contract expected to be awarded later this year.

The stated purpose for deploying these remote-controlled robots is for "situational awareness and threat assessment." ICE suggests the robots would be deployed in environments deemed particularly dangerous, unstable, or difficult to access during enforcement operations. Details regarding any potential offensive capabilities of the robots remain undisclosed.

This move comes amid ongoing controversy surrounding ICE's enforcement tactics and policies. Earlier this year, the agency faced significant backlash after federal agents were involved in fatal shootings of U.S. citizens Renée Good and Alex Pretti. Subsequent deadly encounters have been reported in cities like Houston and in the state of Maine. ICE has also recently drawn attention for its proposed acquisition of stun gloves.

Robotic dogs are not new to security operations. Similar models from Boston Dynamics have been utilized in other contexts, including security inspections at the Port of Hamburg, Germany, where they were employed to assess bridge safety. These robots are also capable of assisting in situations involving bomb threats or other hazardous conditions. The deployment of such technology by ICE raises further questions about the agency's approach to immigration enforcement.
