US Maintains Level 4 Security Alert for Michoacán Despite Resumed Exports

The United States Embassy in Mexico has kept its security alert for Michoacán at Level 4, strongly advising U.S. citizens against traveling to the state. This advisory persists even as the U.S. government officially resumed all its activities in Michoacán on Thursday, August 13.

I recognize the Government of Mexico, particularly its Security Cabinet, for the actions and close coordination that made this total resumption possible efficiently. We will continue to monitor security conditions and adjust our operations as appropriate.

The resumption of activities follows the implementation of security measures by the Mexican government and an assessment of the conditions on the ground, which had led to a temporary suspension of avocado exports. U.S. Ambassador Ronald Johnson acknowledged the Mexican Security Cabinet for their actions and close coordination, which facilitated the efficient resumption of operations.

Ambassador Johnson emphasized that the U.S. priority remains the safety of American personnel and the residents of Michoacán. He highlighted this outcome as a tangible result of cooperation between the U.S. and Mexico, stating that working together strengthens the security and prosperity of both nations. The embassy also encouraged U.S. citizens to stay informed through local media, maintain contact with loved ones regarding their whereabouts and well-being, and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for emergency assistance.
