US Mission hails Nigerian doctor for kidney care innovation

The United States Mission in Nigeria has lauded Dr. Ikenna Okezie, a Nigerian-American physician and entrepreneur, for his significant impact on kidney care and healthcare access within the U.S. Okezie, who leads Somatus as its CEO and co-founder, has pioneered in-home dialysis support for individuals suffering from chronic kidney disease.

Somatus operates as a value-based care company, collaborating with various medical groups, health plans, and health systems. Its focus is on providing integrated care for patients who have or are at risk of developing kidney disease and congestive heart failure. The company, now valued at approximately $2.5 billion, is a key innovator in specialized healthcare management, aligning with the broader U.S. healthcare industry's move toward value-based care models.

Okezie's journey into medicine was influenced by his father and elder brother, both physicians. After earning a degree in Economics from Yale University, he pursued a dual Doctor of Medicine and Master of Business Administration from Harvard, specializing in finance and entrepreneurship. Prior to co-founding Somatus, he held significant leadership roles at DaVita Inc. and McKinsey & Company, managing substantial business units and strategic operations.
