US mother 'meticulously planned' murder of three children, trial hears

In a Massachusetts courtroom, the trial of Lindsay Clancy, accused of murdering her three young children, has reached its closing arguments. The prosecution portrayed Clancy, 36, as a "functioning mom" who meticulously planned the deaths of her children Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, eight months old, in their suburban home in 2023. Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Sprague told the jury that Clancy was "done with being their mother."

Clancy has not denied killing her children, but her defense team argues she was suffering from postpartum psychosis, a rare mental health condition. They contend that this condition, coupled with her desperate search for help, led to her spiraling after her youngest son's birth. Her lawyer, Kevin Reddington, challenged the prosecution's narrative, emphasizing Clancy's suicide attempt on the day of the killings, which left her partially paralyzed.

During closing arguments, Reddington used coins hitting a table to symbolize his arguments, questioning the prosecution's interpretation of events. He argued that Clancy's suicide attempt was serious and that the prosecution had "ripped the soul out of this girl." The defense suggested that the killings took less than 20 minutes, contrary to the prosecution's assertion that it would have required sustained effort.

The prosecution, however, sought to undermine the defense's claims, suggesting Clancy's wounds were superficial and that if she had truly heard voices, she would have succeeded in taking her own life. They also argued that Clancy may have been coached into telling health professionals she heard voices commanding her to kill the children. Text messages and diary entries from Clancy were presented as evidence throughout the trial, with the jury now tasked with determining her fate.
