US plans over $340 million initiative to counter China's global infrastructure push

The Trump administration is reportedly planning a significant global initiative, allocating over $340 million for more than 50 projects. The primary goal is to counter China's expanding influence worldwide.

Documents obtained by the Associated Press reveal that the administration has conveyed deep concerns to Congress regarding China's activities in the Americas, its ownership of ports on both ends of the Panama Canal, infrastructure projects funded under the Belt and Road Initiative, and its telecommunications investments.

Specifically, the U.S. intends to spend $175.8 million to upgrade aging undersea telecommunications cables in the Caribbean and Central America. This funding targets projects in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Haiti, aiming to reduce China's regional sway. An internal State Department document indicates a potential additional budget of nearly half a billion dollars for programs targeting China across the Western Hemisphere, Africa, and Asia.

"The United States must respond to the growing economic, technological, and diplomatic influence of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) globally, which undermines our national interests," the document states. The plan also includes developing secure communication technologies to counter Chinese interference in the selection process for the Dalai Lama's successor, limiting international support for China's space program, and preventing Chinese companies from exporting surveillance and censorship technologies.
